February 24, 2024  –  June 2, 2024

Opening: February 23, 2024, at 7 PM

Friedrichsplatz 18, 34117 Kassel

The Fridericianum in Kassel honors the work of Ulla Wiggen with a comprehensive survey exhibition. The work of the artist, who was born in 1942 in Stockholm, is characterized by outstanding formal and conceptual acuity. Spanning six decades, Wiggen’s oeuvre comprises four distinct bodies of paintings: renderings of circuit boards and other electronic components, portraits, medical imagery showing bones and inner organs of the human body and works that focus on the iris of the eye. Formally, these diverse motifs are united by Wiggen’s painterly refinement and attention to detail. Conceptually, they evince her interest in visually probing the workings of complex systems, from computers to human minds and bodies. The survey at the Fridericianum will bring together more than forty paintings from across Wiggen’s career, offering an in-depth, wide-ranging, and chronological view of her remarkable practice.

The exhibition is being realized in collaboration with the EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland. It is held under the patronage of Her Excellency Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Ambassador of Sweden to Germany.

With the generous support of the Leinemann Stiftung für Bildung und Kunst, the Karin und Uwe Hollweg Stiftung, the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual and Applied Arts (IASPIS).
